The tomato eating monster I captured is commonly known as a Tomato Hornworm, the scientific name is Manduca quinquemaculata.  It pupates into a Five Spotted Hawkmoth.  Its larvae feeds on potato, tomato, tobacco and other plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
