When the garden plan was made it included more than plotting a space.  One of the many factors considered in successfully growing marketable produce was the labor involved.  The labor has many factors to consider, not the least of which is heat in the mid to late growing season.

MLGardens developed a plan to enable labor to adapt to the heat with the use of frequent breaks, constant hydration, and promoting interest in horticulture, entomology and organic methodology.  One program that stands out as a success is called the Cherry program.

The Cherry program is a cost effective and efficient utilization of available labor in temperatures higher during the mid growing season.  Organic in nature and simple to implement, the procedure is as follows.

Procure fresh cherries.  In a small cooler place a layer of ice.  Put 12 cherries on the ice in the small cooler.  Spend the needed amount of time explaining to the labor once an accomplishment is made a cold cherry may be consumed and expelled unto the ground.  Labor is naturally encouraged, nourished and hydrated by the natural flavor and refreshment offered by one cold cherry and strives to make additional accomplishments than normal in high temperatures and other difficult climate conditions.

As you can see this program contributes to accomplishments not limited to working the field.  Litter pick up is also rewarded resulting in longer labor duration.
